One of the biggest palaces in Rome, the Barberini Palace was built in the early seventeenth century by Carlo Maderno, Borromini and Bernini. Of the many decorated rooms, the most striking is the Gran Salone with its illusionistic ceiling fresco by Pietro da Cortona which took six years to complete. The Barberini collection is mainly of Italian paintings from the thirteenth to the sixteenth century with works by Caravaggio, Filippo Lippi, Lorenzo Lotto, Hans Holbein, Andrea del Sarto, Perugino, Canaletto and Raphael.
